The lung is the only organ to which oxygen may be provided after its blood provide is stopped. Before this research, we were not certain whether or not lung cells were able to maintain aerobic metabolism with the oxygen in the alveoli throughout preservation. Excised rabbit lungs were used to measure adjustments within the focus of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the airway and modifications in glucose, glucose-6-phosphate, lactate, adenosine triphosphate, and phosphocreatine levels within the lung tissue during preservation under different situations. 11) for 4, 12, or 24 hours. 4) hours. Oxygen ranges decreased and carbon dioxide ranges elevated in the airway of the lungs that have been inflated with room air at charges dependent on the preservation temperature. The rise of carbon dioxide in the lungs that were inflated with 100% nitrogen was very small. When the oxygen was not accessible within the alveoli, lactate accumulated, and adenosine triphosphate and phosphocreatine decreased in the lung tissue. We concluded that lung cells are able to take care of aerobic metabolism with the oxygen within the alveoli throughout preservation and that the upkeep of aerobic metabolism may be important to keep up the optimum viability of preserved lung tissue.
